Ostrich & Mouse – Character Animation & Storytelling

Witness this short story of an extraordinary bond between an ostrich and a mouse, showcasing the beauty of friendship that transcends species.

About The Project

Driven by an amusing concept of an unlikely friendship, I created a short, heartwarming animated story about an ostrich and a mouse. The project focuses on bringing distinct characters to life through visual storytelling, expressive movement, and classical 2D animation techniques.

The Creative Process & Workflow

To give both characters personality and fluid movement, I guided the project through a full animation pipeline:

1️⃣ Character Design & Rough Sketching: I started with loose hand-drawn sketches to explore character proportions, expressive poses, and the visual dynamic between a huge ostrich and a tiny mouse.

2️⃣ Vector Artwork & Refinement (Adobe Illustrator): After locking in the character concepts, I painted and refined the final vector artwork in Illustrator, carefully organizing body parts into separate layers to prepare them for rigging and motion.

3️⃣ Character Animation & Principles (Adobe After Effects): In After Effects, I applied core animation principles – such as squash & stretch, anticipation, and secondary motion – to give the characters weight, life, and emotional connection in a heartwarming narrative.

Why Character Animation Works for Brands

Bespoke character design combined with emotive motion design is one of the most powerful tools for visual storytelling:

🟣 Instant Emotional Connection: Quirky, relatable characters create immediate empathy and make brand narratives memorable.

🟣 Complex Dynamics Made Simple: Character interactions can communicate themes like partnership, trust, and friendship far more effectively than text.

🟣 Versatile Brand Assets: Hand-crafted vector characters can easily be repurposed across websites, social media campaigns, and print collateral.
