This collage explainer video was part of a communication by the anti-corruption NGO Transparency International on the issue of the Whistleblower Protection Act. It shows not only examples of what such violations may look like in practice, but also the options of who a potential whistleblower can turn to.
When the Czech Republic introduced the Whistleblower Protection Act in 2023, anti-corruption NGO Transparency International CZ needed an engaging explainer video to educate the public. The campaign aimed to highlight real-world examples of workplace violations and clearly outline where whistleblowers can safely seek help.
To tackle this complex legal topic, I created an educational explainer video that seamlessly blends mixed-media collage with clean vector graphics.
The Creative Process & Workflow
Working from the initial script and concept provided by the Transparency International team, I took charge of the visual direction, design, and production:
1️⃣ Style Exploration & Moodboarding: I prepared a moodboard featuring three distinct visual directions. The team chose a hybrid collage and vector style, offering the ideal balance of serious subject matter and engaging visual flair.
2️⃣ Storyboard & Narrative Flow: With the visual direction chosen, I created a detailed frame-by-frame storyboard to map out the story and ensure a seamless narrative flow for complex legal scenarios.
3️⃣ Style Frames & Mixed-Media Asset Creation: Then, I built key style frames to finalize and approve the exact look and feel, crafting custom mixed-media assets by combining clean vector elements with textured collage cut-outs.
4️⃣ Animation, Voiceover & Sound Design: Finally, I animated the compositions in After Effects and synchronized the footage with the voiceover recorded by Martina Foldynová (host of TI’s podcast Stošestka), completing the video with custom sound effects, background music, and open captions.
Visual Concept & Color Storytelling
To help viewers easily navigate the narrative and distinguish between illegal practices and solutions, I developed a intentional, color-coded visual system split into two main acts:
➡️ Act I — Black & White (The Problem):
The first part of the video uses short story vignettes to illustrate specific examples of law violations. To set a somber, serious tone, these scenes are rendered in black and white. Red elements are reserved exclusively for negative actors, while blue accents highlight positive elements representing legal compliance and oversight.
➡️ Act II — Vibrant Color (The Solution & Action):
In the second half, the visual tone shifts into full color as our main character decides to take action. As they explore available reporting channels, the palette shifts to emphasize blue action elements (taking steps forward) and bright yellow accents (representing official institutions and support organizations).
Why This Hybrid Approach Works for Clients
Combining vector graphics with collage elements is a highly versatile choice for complex, educational, or legal content:
🟣 Style Alignment (Moodboarding): Presenting style options early ensures the visual direction aligns perfectly with the brand’s messaging before production begins.
🟣 Clarity Meets Creativity: Vectors bring structure, icons, and clear typography, while collage adds texture, emotion, and visual depth – turning complex topics into a dynamic and highly engaging video.
🟣 Multi-Format Accessibility: Complete integration of voiceover, synchronized sound effects, and open captions ensures the video performs brilliantly across all social media platforms and public presentations.
